Estate Planning And Probate Attorney Serving The Bronx And Beyond

Wherever you are in life, your estate plan can provide many benefits. Until recent changes to the estate tax law, saving estates taxes was a primary goal. Now that estates of less than $4,187,500 plus bequests to a spouse are exempt from estate taxes, the focus of estate planning is redirected to who should get what and protecting your family from the unexpected.

My name is Lorraine Coyle, and I am attorney with Coyle & Associates LLP. My clients are primarily in the Bronx, Manhattan and Westchester, though I serve families throughout the New York City area. In addition to passing your property to your loved ones in the manner you see fit, I can help you plan for issues such as incapacity. Many people go through a period of incapacity prior to death. Without the proper legal documents in place, your family could face unexpected costs and difficulties.

Your estate plan can also address other issues such as passing a family-owned business to the next generation, minimizing the impact of the estate tax or even creating a charitable legacy. With a skilled lawyer on your side, you make the decisions as to what you want; not what other people say you should do.

Offering Exceptional Experience And Estate Planning Knowledge

Some clients I have had for more than 30 years. Some are new, but virtually all clients are referred by other clients, which is a very good recommendation. I create wills, trusts, powers of attorney, health care proxies and other documents that meet my clients' estate planning goals. In every estate plan, I work closely with my clients to understand their specific objectives. Once I have this knowledge, I create an estate plan that is customized to their exact needs. Over my career, which spans more than 30 years, I have never had one of my wills challenged — not even a hint of a challenge.

Guiding Families Through The Probate Process

I also help clients navigate probate without overcharging. The idea that I should get a percentage of the estate borders on the absurd. This, in my opinion, with rare exceptions, is overcharging the client and that I will not do. Most probates are charged on a flat fee or an hourly basis which, with one exception, has always been cheaper for the client. Of this I am quite proud. I will attend to all duties involved in probate, including:

  • Providing notice to heirs and creditors
  • Paying any valid estate debts and taxes
  • Resolving claims against the estate
  • Distributing property to estate beneficiaries

In every estate I guide through probate, my goal is to make the probate process as quick and seamless as possible. I was recently consulted by a client who had been quoted a fee of more than $17,000 to probate and estate. I quickly realized he did not need probate and was able to transfer the deed, which is all he wanted, for $577. That is one happy client.
